Southwest Michigan Officials Association

The SMOA has been around for a number years. Long before the MHSAA required officials to be a member of an approved association the SMOA was formed by a group of individuals that wanted to work together to make all of us better officials.  The meetings were less frequent than they are now, but the goal was the same, by sharing experiences and rules knowledge, all members would benefit. With the added emphasis from the MHSAA, the association has grown to over 60 members. Training sessions are held throughout the year by certified trainers. The SMOA welcomes new members in all MHSAA sports. To join the association simply fill out the membership form found on the Links Page or contact any current member or officer for more information.

Goals of the Southwest Michigan Officials Association:

Provide a higher caliber of officiating for regular season and tournament contests assigned by MHSAA member schools.

Educate our members through classes, programs, meetings and clinics, intended to improve all officials.

To fully comply with MHSAA guidelines and requirements in order to remain in good standing as an "Approved Association".

Promote the MHSAA “Code for Athletic Officials” (

Assist new officials by assigning a veteran official of that sport to mentor, guide, and assist their personal growth as officials.
